Nabd Al-Ard – Cooperative Empowerment Initiative

Project overview

Nabd Al-Ard is a community-based initiative dedicated to supporting women- and youth-led cooperatives across six governorates in the West Bank — Hebron, Bethlehem, Ramallah, Nablus, Tulkarem, and Jenin. The project aims to promote social justice and food security by strengthening local cooperatives specialized in agriculture, livestock, and food production. Funded by the Swedish organization We Effect and implemented in collaboration with the Cooperative Work Authority, Nabd Al-Ard works to advance cooperative values, economic inclusion, and sustainable community development.

The Challenges

The project faced multiple challenges, including limited access to financial and technical resources in rural areas, as well as logistical difficulties in coordinating activities across different governorates. Many cooperatives, particularly those led by women and youth, also lacked visibility, organizational capacity, and sustainable business practices. Addressing these barriers required not only resources but also trust-building, education, and consistent engagement with local communities.

Our Strategy

To tackle these challenges, Nabd Al-Ard adopted a holistic and participatory approach. The team conducted comprehensive field assessments to understand the specific needs of each cooperative and designed tailored training programs in management, marketing, and financial sustainability. Collaboration among cooperatives was encouraged through networking events and knowledge-sharing sessions. The project also developed communication materials and awareness campaigns to highlight the achievements of women and youth cooperatives, amplifying their voices and showcasing their contribution to local food security and social equity.
